Leeds

Like it, love it!

Interested in studying in Leeds? Then read on…

Leeds certainly knows how to deliver as a “student city”. Dubbed the “Knightsbridge of the north”, the northern gem, small enough to get around yet large enough to keep you busy, caters for all tastes in fashion, music and activities. Keen to investigate the X-Cel team went up north to ‘ave it!

Leeds by Day
For those interested in studying in Leeds you won’t be disappointed. Leeds life is an experience in itself. Its rich local history, world class sports venues, extensive shopping facilities and diverse programme of year-round entertainment are just some of the many things that make Leeds such a great place for all to enjoy.

The city was dubbed the ‘Knightsbridge of the North’ by the Lonely Planet Guide, and since Harvey Nichols opened their first store outside of London, the city has seen a host of designers eagerly opening stores and boutiques across the city.

Leeds is a shopaholic’s dream. From the elegant domed structure of the Corn Exchange to the exquisite Victoria Quarter and the endless mountain of goodies within Kirkgate Market, the city caters for all wants and needs. There are also plenty of opportunities to refuel with the wide variety of cafes and restaurants.

Leeds is not a city that stands still, as its skyline, currently adorned with cranes suggests. A further £500 million retail-led development on the Harewood and Eastgate Quarters in the city centre is now in the pipeline. Shopping in Leeds continues to improve - Briggate is one of the latest areas to have been modernised.

Leeds by Night
For the student whop enjoys a great night life, studying in Leeds will provide you with plenty of nightlife action. The whole of Leeds really comes to life in the evening. It's not just the city centre that gets packed with people enjoying the nightlife – other areas of Leeds, such as Chapel Allerton, Headingley and Street Lane also become hotspots.

Like many cities, Leeds can be divided into various quarters – the Northern Quarter, the Corn Exchange and the two universities – each home to a range of venues that make a great night out in themselves but also merge to make Leeds one huge party town!

The city is just filled to bursting with great places to eat, with options ranging from cafes where you can get a quick cuppa and piece of cake, to exquisite restaurants for fine dining, all within easy reach. Leeds is renowned for good nights out. As well as the usual high street suspects, the city has a fantastic array of independent bars and clubs.

Leeds also boasts a rich creative heritage. It plays hosts to the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition and the Leeds International Film Festival. Outstanding productions and performances are showcased at venues such as The West Yorkshire Playhouse and Leeds Town Hall. It is the only city outside London to have both its own opera and ballet companies – the internationally acclaimed Opera North and Northern Ballet.

Leeds Sport
Interested in studying sport in Leeds? Sport remains central to city life, especially with the successes of the Rhinos in Rugby League and the Tykes in Rugby Union. The rugby sides share their home at Headingley Carnegie Stadium with Michael Vaughan’s Yorkshire County Cricket Club, whilst across the city at Elland Road, Ken Bates is rebuilding Leeds United in order to mount a Premiership challenge once again.

Leeds Culture

If you are interested in studying in Leeds but you like a bit of culture, then you will be pleased to know that the city has much to offer people of all ages, from the award-winning Royal Armouries, to the gardens of Tropical World, and Leeds’ finest stately home, Harewood House. You can find one of the country's finest collections of twentieth century British art at Leeds City Art Gallery, including works by Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Antony Gormley.
